Weipa
BACK
Weipa is situated on the western coast of Cape York (Gulf of Carpentaria) 850 km north of Cairns, Weipa can be reached on the Peninsula Development Road via Lakeland Downs, Laura, Coen and Archer River. QantasLink operates daily jet services from Cairns.

Weipa provides a welcome relief from the hot and dry interior. A very modern town of 3,500 people, it is the site of the world's largest bauxite mine (the main component for the manufacture of aluminium) which is operated by Comalco.

The locals of Weipa have a reputation of being very friendly, you better believe it! The life style is relaxed and fishing is the main topic of conversation over a cold ale or two. Being good sports people is an understatement, golf, bowls, tennis, cricket, net ball etc. are actively supported. Weipa has a modern shopping complex which means you can restock your supplies in air-conditioned comfort. Within the Nanum Centre is the Butcher Shop, Supermarket, film processing, souvenir and speciality shops. Opposite the Nanum Centre is the McNamara Centre with the Post Office and retail shops.

The well appointed Weipa Camp Ground is right next to these services, very convenient! Right on the banks of Albatross Bay, the camp ground has excellent facilities. Tours for the Bauxite mines are operated from the camp ground, an experience not to be missed. All bauxite mining is done above ground, safety regulations apply and access to the mining areas is permitted only on organised tours.

Permits are required to camp on, or visit local indigenous land in the Mapoon and Arukun areas. Information and permits can be obtained from the Weipa Camping Ground (07 4069 7871) or the Weipa Town Office (07 4069 9733) Albatross Bay is very picturesque with well located picnic areas. Evans Landing is the home of the fishing fleet and has a public boat ramp. The new Western Cape Cultural Centre is at Evans Landing and is well worth a visit, giving you an insight to the local Aboriginal culture and mining history of Weipa. Lorim Point is the hub of operations for Comalco, here you will see the loading wharf and storage area for bauxite. Rocky Point is the site of the original development of Weipa back in 1965. Weipa is primarily a mining town and you are a guest of Comalco when you visit.

Estuarine crocodiles inhabit all the waterways around Weipa so care must be taken when launching boats or walking in isolated areas and only swim in the public swimming pool.

Enjoy your stay and get to meet the locals.
