| Northern Peninsula Area |
|---|
North of the Jardine River is known as the
Northern Peninsula Area ( NPA ). The population of the Northern
Peninsula Area is a mix of Aboriginal, Islander, European and Asian, it
may be a little confusing for visitors to distinguish between the
different communities. Bamaga is a mix of about four or five Islander
groups. Injinoo, Umajico and New Mapoon are Aboriginal communities,
Seisia is Islander.
Serviced camping grounds are located at Injinoo, Umajico, Seisia,
Loyalty Beach and Punsand Bay, there are a number of unserviced camp
sites in the area, but you must be self sufficient at these. There is a
choice of accommodation at Bamaga, Seisia, Loyalty Beach and Punsand
Bay. Guided day tours, hire cars and fishing trips are available within
the area.
Bamaga is the main town of the Northern Peninsula Area, with post
office, supermarket, takeaway food, bakery, fuel and government
services. About 8km from Bamaga is Seisia, overlooking the Torres
Strait, camping, fuel, supermarket, kiosk and a small industrial area.
Seisia wharf is the hub of activity, the ferries leave from here to
Thursday Island, boats of all descriptions come and go, it is said to
be the best wharf fishing spot in Australia!
There are a lot of things to see and do in the Northern Peninsula Area,
but please keep in mind that swimming is not recommended, crocodiles
inhabit most rivers and creeks, as well as the coast. A good map will
help you locate points of interest and details of tracks in the area.
The rainforests of the top are very unique and spectacular. The roads
through the Northern Peninsula Area are very winding and narrow with
many blind corners, slow down and take it easy, keep an eye out for
wild life on the roads. The "Tip" is the place where you stand at the most northerly point of mainland Australia. The walk through the rainforest to Frangipani Beach and over the headland is about 20 minutes. Take some drinking water with you and wear a hat. Please respect the area, it is Aboriginal land and it is forbidden to remove plants and rocks. Of course a photo of yourself is proof that you made it to "The Tip", maybe even a glass of champagne to celebrate your achievement. Notes from Peddells Ferry |
