Welcome to the big land of outback plains, endless blue skies and flaming sunsets! Mareeba, where the rainforest meets the outback, is situated 64km west of Cairns at an altitude of 417m. With a population of approximately 8,500 Mareeba is the largest town on the Tropical Tablelands and well known as the "Gateway to the Cape". With all of it's services and facilities, Mareeba is the ideal place to stock up with supplies and make sure your vehicle and equipment are ready to embark on the adventure of a life time. Mareeba is the centre of a rich agriculture area, producing crops such as, sugar cane, coffee, mangoes, pineapples, avocados, lychees, bananas and a variety of exotic fruits and vegetables. Stay awhile and discover the wide range of unique natural and man made attractions in the area. Accommodation is available in town at any one of Mareeba's well-appointed motels/hotels. The Mareeba Heritage Museum and Tourist Information Centre is well worth a visit with displays of Aboriginal Culture, Pioneer and Early Settler history, mining at Mount Mulligan, Mareeba Rail Ambulance, a purpose built Blacksmith Shop and lots of historical memorabillia. The information centre staff will provide you with all the accurate and up to date information you will need to explore Mareeba Shire's many fascinating attractions.

Mareeba's natural attractions include feeding rock wallabies at Granite Gorge. Access is gained by turning west off the main street of town and heading through rich farming country for 12.5km. The gigantic granite rock formations with deep pools will amaze you, feed the wallabies at dawn or just on dusk. The gorge is on privately owned land and a nominal charge is made for entry.

Davies Creek National Park is situated on the Kennedy highway 21km's south west of Kuranda, or 15km east of Mareeba. There are 7km of gravel road with corrugations and is unsuitable for caravans. An unmarked 2km walk upstream from the camping area leads to the base of Davies Creek Falls. This is also the home of the northern Bettong. You can go swimming in the crystal clear water at Emerald Creek Falls, just 15km from the township.

The Mareeba Tropical Savannah and Wetlands Reserve is at the foot of the Hann Tablelands, to the northwest of the town. The Wetlands covers 120ha of open water and attract a rich, diverse birdlife and aquatic wildlife. More than 3,300 species of birds have been noted in the Mareeba Shire, making it a leading birdwatching area. Interpretive tours are available as well as canoe hire, picnic grounds and light refreshments.

Heading west, the country turns from forest to open savannah land and you feel as though you have entered the real Australian outback. Dimbulah is the first town you visit and close by is majestic Mt Mulligan and historic Tyrconnell Gold Mine.

The Mt Molloy - Julatten area to the northeast is rich in natural attractions and history. A myriad of bird species are found in the various habitats, ranging from tropical to dry savannah. Historic Mt Molloy boasts the oldest hotel on the Tablelands and together with Mt Carbine has a proud history of copper, tin and wolframite mining.
