Karumba

BACK

Karumba was once a base for Empire Flying Boats on their journey from Sydney to London and later as an RAAF base for Catalina flying boats. This sleepy part of the Gulf has just recently been discovered by outback travellers and is fast becoming a favourite place to visit.

Karumba is two parts, the main commerce township on the banks of the Norman River and Karumba Point which has the only stretch of beach in the Gulf Savannah region accessible by sealed road.

Fishing is of course the main recreation, with the warm turquoise waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria abounding with all varieties of marine life, fishing charters are available with professional local fishing guides. There is a public boat ramp at Karumba Point with good access to the exciting Gulf of Carpentaria.

The sunsets from Karumba Point are absolutely stunning. It is very popular to relax on the beach or the deck of the local tavern and have a "sundowner" with some friends.

You can visit the Barramundi Restocking facility where you can feed and touch barramundi broodfish. Learn how the barramundi spawn in captivity and how the lavea are reared to fingerling size for release into the wild.

Most services are available in Karumba and accommodation varies from well appointed motels and lodges to camping grounds and caravan parks.
