| Horn Island |
|---|
Named by Matthew Flinders in 1803, Horn Island is quite large and flat, with two horns at the top of the island. Surrounded by coral reef and mangroves, facilities on Horn Island are very limited, however, there is a very well appointed motel on the island. The airstrip on Horn Island was a vital link in Australia's defence during WW2, today it is a modern, island style airport with transfers to Thursday Island by ferry or water taxi. Horn Island goes beyond the expectations of many visitors and makes a memorable experience in anyone’s Torres Strait adventure. Richard See Kee who ran the Gateway Motel was a local identity and in his younger days was a "hard hat" pearl diver. Over the years, Richard collected a great deal of memorabilia that is now housed in a well-appointed private museum at the rear of the motel. Visit the museum and believe me, it is well worth while. On display are artifacts from the Torres Islanders and from the war years, photos, newspapers, uniforms, weapons, communications equipment and even original Japanese documents relating to the invasion of Australia! Of course, there is also an extensive pearling display with Richard's diving helmet in pride of place. A tour of Horn Island is quite enjoyable. The award winning Torres Strait Heritage, provides a comprehensive, and inspiring WW2 and cultural tour on Horn Island and are the curators of the Torres Strait Heritage Museum. The tour and museum are the only ones of their kind in the area. “We have done a lot of tours and museums around Australia, but yours is the best by far we have ever experienced.” RR NSW June 2009. They can assist with any Torres Strait travel enquries ; Horn Island tours, Cape York 4wd adventures, aerial sightseeing, accommodation, Thursday Island tours, pearl farm visits and more. |
