The Gulf of Carpentaria is well known for the abundance of prawns and excellent fishing grounds, to say the least, it is just teaming with fish. Knowing where and when to get amongst it all is the secret. The prawn season starts in April, after the wet and the prawn trawlers are in hot pursuit of the famous tiger prawns.Normanton has access to the Norman River while Karumba is right on the coast. Karumba Point at the mouth of the Norman River, has a public boat ramp that launches you straight into the Gulf's turquoise water. It is fairly open water with scattered coral shelves so good boat sense is warranted and of course a reliable boat. You must always be aware that you are in crocodile country, make sure that you don't clean fish around the boat ramp! The best way to enjoy the action these waters have to offer is to book onto a fishing charter and let the experts get you amongst it. There is a multiple choice of fishing charters available assuring you of a great catch and some good tales to tell your mates when you get home. |
